Step 7 – Support – Go Public (But Only With the Right People)
If you’ve set goals for any length of time you’ve heard about letting people know about your goals so you can use the social pressure to hold yourself accountable. But often that can backfire. Either after backsliding you stop talking about it and hope that everyone forgets or you tell the wrong people and they commiserate with you when you succumb to temptation and then undermine your successes and try to bring you down (to make them feel better about not achieving theirs).
You see it all the time in the celebrity worshiping world. People love to see the successful fall from grace.
So WHO you choose to let in on your little goal setting secret IS important.
And who are the best people to inform? People who will hold you accountable and also cheer you on to greater success and help you through the tough times?
You’re looking for other successful people generally. Hopefully you already have a couple in your peer group. Generally family members need to be aware but don’t expect them to always understand (especially when they feel like they’re playing second fiddle to your goals).
But what is even better than successful friends?
A Coach, a Trainer, a Mentor, a Sherpa
These people are worth their fee.
Why?
Because they aren’t as invested in your personal relationships. They are there to get a job done. And that job is making you successful at achieving your goals. If you don’t hit your goals then you don’t refer people to them, and they can’t use your testimonials, and their business doesn’t grow and make them more successful.
They are the personal trainer who goads you into pushing through that last rep, while maintaining perfect form. They are the business coach who can see inside your business to the high leverage areas you didn’t notice because you were too close to it and hold you accountable each month for delivering on your commitments. They are the career coach who follows up each week with you to ensure you’re taking your career and job search seriously and doing the hard tasks that are necessary to land that dream job.
As you look over the past year and what you have achieved, are you satisfied? Did you accomplish all you set out to do and more? And if you did were your goals audacious enough? Or did you wimp out and attempt only goals you knew you could accomplish?
As you look forward into this new year, recognize that achieving greatness (however you define it) will never be an easy road. But it is a worthy one.
So make that commitment. Attempt awesome goals. And get the help you need.
