Are you a newbie (or even an experienced marketer) who feels overwhelmed by all the marketing choices at your disposal and find yourself jumping from one shiny-object-traffic tactic to the next? Trying to implement what the big-dog marketers make look easy with their automated marketing funnels and full-time development staffs?
When you try their ideas you either have too little traffic that won’t get the results they get. Or you are too new to be taken seriously by other marketers for guest posting and joint venture opportunities. And buying traffic on Google or Facebook is an exercise in futility as the rates you’re charged as a newbie make the model unrealistic.
Plus you’re probably still figuring out much of the internet marketing stuff as you get acclimated to the world that seems to have its own language and secret club.
Life as a Newbie Blogger.
Like you I started in this internet marketing world. I started off slowly. New blogging website – setting it up from scratch on WordPress. Learning the basics of SEO. Playing around with ideas and writing blog posts. After a year and a half it has just started to gain momentum. I have started to get guest post requests (other marketers writing blog posts for my site), converting visitors into readers into sales (at this point focusing on resume rewrites and career coaching along with small business strategy coaching).
I’m not all-in as a full time internet marketer or blogger. I have a day job that I already work 50 hours at. And then I have family at home who need my attention at the end of the day. And I still have to get the work done needed to build my blog and side hustle business. At times it can be overwhelming.
The reason I relay this is I’m not much different than you.
Like me, you find yourself pulled in many different directions. Everyone seems to have something from you that is a priority. And so you find yourself spinning your wheels and struggling to get ahead.
How I can help.
Early on in my blogging I decided that while I learned to do this business I would take advantage of my natural strengths –being an analytical nerd and always wanting to discover simpler and easier ways to do everything.
So early on I came across a cool marketing technique that aligned with my analytical approach to marketing but was able to be implemented by a newbie like me. It was the Skyscraper Technique by Brian Dean of Backlinko.
Brian’s idea was to combine take a well performing blog post that ranked high on Google. Then make it better. And follow that up with an effective marketing approach to get the word out.
Although it was well documented in a step-by-step approach, it was still a lot of work, required some technical expertise, and some aspects were difficult for me to implement.
So I implemented a modified version. Note here: sometimes you have to take something and run with it. If you’re looking for perfection you’ll never launch and never learn or make progress. Sometimes doing something that is less-than-optimal is better than trying to get it “just right.”
Here’s what that initial launch of this technique produced.
My List Post: Ultimate List: 156 Most-Read Marketing Blogs
I took other marketing blog list posts and created a mega post from that then promoted it on Twitter with the following tweet style.
wow, 156 marketing blogs list @socialmedia2day @hubspot
@webpronews @inboundorg @business2community
@marketingprofs http://buff.ly/2eMLMB2
It did really well for me in driving traffic to my very new site. This one post ended up going to #1 or #2 on Google.
- 348 Unique Pageviews
- Page views from launch: 0-2-27-75-115-17-3-2-1-23-2-2-0-14-18-3-6-3-5-6-1-1-6-2-3-2-0
- 248 Unique Pageviews in the first month
- 9 Unique Pageviews a month 1 year later
Now for someone with 1-5 page views a day at that time (my blog was only a few months old) I felt like I’d found the Holy Grail.
And so when I looked back a year later, when my traffic had increased from an average of 3 to 5 page views a day to 15 to 50, I said to myself, “How can I do something similar?” By then this post had dropped down to #11 and was no longer on the first page of Google.
And that is when I came across a follow up method from Brian that seemed like just the ticket.
Look for my email tomorrow when I show you what that is and start walking you through how you can use that same method to get similar results. Results that took my post from #11 to #2 on Google.
Til tomorrow…
