Every business owner knows that marketing is important. Alas, that doesn’t necessarily equate to marketing success. The truth is that marketing can be tricky. While there may have been a time when you could just throw in a few keywords, and your job would be done, that’s no longer true. The game has become a lot more advanced. And in addition to that, people are still making common errors that hold them back from having a successful campaign.
In this blog, we’re going to run through some common marketing mistakes. If you’re guilty of any of them, then you’ll know what to do!
Trying to Reach Everyone
Yes, it would be very nice if you could throw out a blog post and know that it would appeal to everyone on the web. But that’s not realistic. The best you can hope for is that it’ll appeal to some people. When you’re working on your marketing campaigns, it’s important that you’re developing them with a target audience in mind. If you have a robust buyer person in mind, then you’ll be able to tailor your offerings — including the wording and so forth — so it’s most effective. The more detailed your buyer persona is, the better.
One Dimensional Content
The web is a dynamic place. It’s not just about text on a screen anymore. So if all you’re doing is using the written word, then you’re missing out on other, more engaging content types. Different people respond to different things. Some people will like reading blogs. Others will prefer videos; others will prefer podcasts. Don’t just think about the type of content that you’re going to produce. Think about the medium that you’ll use to convey the message. This won’t just lead to more engaging content; it’s more fun to produce with different mediums!
Undervaluing Social Media
Your ambition might be to have everyone visit your website. But realistically, they’re not going to go straight to your site from Google, not every time. If you want to reach the people, then you need to go to where the people are. And increasingly, that’s social media. Did you know that Americans spend 16% of their time on social media? If you want to get your message seen by as many people as possible, then be sure to use social media correctly. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram aren’t just useful tools — they’re highly effective ways to reach a large audience.
Overdoing It
Not having enough marketing is bad. And actually, having too much marketing can also be troublesome. For one thing, people may grow tired if you’re pushing your content too much. But also, if you have too much out there, then there’ll likely be an issue with quality. You can’t just pump anything out into the digital world. For it to be effective, it has to offer something of value. Sometimes, less is more. It’s better to have five quality blog posts on your website each month rather than twenty low quality blogs on there.
