I’m sure you’re used to taking frequent breaks during the workdays, but have you ever thought about incorporating some movement into your daily breaks? Walking lunches are a great way to do just that. Sitting at your desk all day can get boring and exhausting, which is why breaks are essential to increasing productivity during the workday.
Aside from the much-needed mental break away from your desk, walking during your lunch has many benefits, like improving communication, enhancing creativity and boosting your mood. Research shows that walking outdoors helps spark create thinking and that even just 10 minutes of walking can lift your spirits and make you feel happier. When we’re happier overall, we tend to perform much better during the workday.
Here are a few tips to help get you started with a successful walking lunch.
1. Lace up your walking shoes.
Whether you’re working from home in slippers or you have your best pair of work shoes on in the office, chances are they’re not equipped for long walks. Make sure you change into a good pair of workout shoes so you stay comfortable and supported during your walk at lunch.
2. Up the intensity.
If you have the time and want to take it up a notch, try adding bouts of sped-up intervals to your walk or taking the stairs to challenge yourself outside of your walking routine. A short lunch break is all you need to get a good sweat sesh in.
3. Invite a coworker.
Sometimes things are better when you grab a buddy. If you’re working in the office, invite your coworker to join you. Walking alone is great, but a partner can help keep you accountable and make it more enjoyable.
4. Don’t forget lunch.
After your walk, make sure you’re refueling your body with a nutritious meal so you’re ready to tackle the rest of the workday.
