Lots of retirees of today are looking at their retirement not as an ending, but as the beginning of a new phase in their lives. While many people enjoy the prospect of continuing to work so that they can earn good money, others want to work a job that they really enjoy.
So if you’ve reached retirement age, now could be a really great time for you to take perhaps less money and do something you’re passionate about.
If this sounds like you, keep reading to get some ideas about what you could do in your retirement!
Do the things you love
When you were in your main job, you may not have pursued your dream job as you worked to support your family, build a life and start saving towards retirement. That’s because ‘passion jobs’ won’t always bring the salary you need to support yourself.
Some of the best jobs after retirement are those that enable you to work in an area that really interests you. You could start by thinking about jobs that relate to childhood interests and hobbies. The great thing is that they are often more flexible, so you get the opportunities you want to be able to relax and enjoy your retirement while bringing in a small income.
For example, if you love cooking, a great job in your retirement could be working in a kitchen store or in a deli where you can share your passion with others. Want to really help others during urgent need? Undertake a training program where you can answer 911 emergency calls and get people the help they need.
Like the idea of working in the community? Why not consider driving a school bus, or helping kids to cross the road safely as a crossing guard? Or if you simply love company and have a spare room in your home, you could consider generating some income as an Airbnb host where you’ll get to meet people from all over the world.
Be a consultant
You’ve likely retired after 40+ years in the workforce. That goes to show that you have built up an awful lot of valuable experience that can help future generations. Whether you worked in the fuels and lubricants business or have years of experience managing business teams, there’s bound to be workforces out there dying to learn all they can about what it takes to be successful.
Consulting offers a lot of flexibility, and because you’re going to be imparting a lot of knowledge, it’s the chance to continue earning good money.
Go back to school
Lots of seniors use their retirement to engage in education and training programs. This is worth considering if you’re looking to change your career path, but you should also think about how much it will cost. Sometimes the cost of education won’t be worth the payback of getting a job–unless your course is for enjoyment purposes only, of course!
Retirement doesn’t have to be all playing golf and reading the newspaper, it’s a great opportunity to put your skills and passions to good use.
