That’s what Perry Marshall, who taps into the heart of America’s marketing engine, posits. Here’s how he gets there.
Start with about 300 million people in the United States.
Consider that half of ’em are retired or in school or on welfare, a fourth of ’em are taking care of the retired ones and the ones in school, you’ve got 75 million left. [This is the “have worked”, “learning to work”, and “don’t want or aren’t able to work” crowds]
But 29 million work for the federal government which means there’s only 46 million left to bring home the bacon. [Working for the government provides a framework for business but doesn’t contribute to the GDP.]
Ah, but then there’s the 15 million who work for the local government, so they’re only marginally more worthwhile than the feds. [Sorry folks, but government is government – no production here.]
We’re down to 31 million now.
80% of the 31 million are either lazy, apathetic and mostly unproductive, or they’re busy undoing the damage done by the dufuses every day. [These are the people who don’t create, sell, or deliver. They are the ones who do the minimum to get by to get to their weekend. Any production is miniscule.]
So in fact there’s only six million people doing real, actual, productive, innovative hard work. [These are the real go-to producers. You know them when you see them in the office or on the work site. They are the ones everyone goes to for answers. They get the projects that must get done. They create. They sell. They strategize. They’re the ones who work late and come in on weekends.]
So which one are you? A Producer or a Hanger On?
Well if you’re reading this you’re likely in the six million, the 2 in 100, that actually makes the U. S. economy run.
You’re the one that the other 98 are depending on to keep them afloat. You’re who they need so they can keep their jobs.
Now being the 2 in 100 is hard work. It often doesn’t get the glory. You may find yourself passed over for promotion opportunities because they need you where you are, getting things done. But in the end you can hold your head up high. And you know whatever happens you’ll always have a job. Because business always needs producers. They can’t survive without them. And as you saw, they’re in short supply.
